Washington Day 3

Today was another day of the four of us doing our own thing which is fine because we all weren’t interested in the same things. After John and Cheryl told us how good their visit to Capitol Hill was the day before Peter and I decided to go and visit. Cheryl and John went to the Spy Museum and then onto Ford’s Theatre where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. This was a place I wished I had visited after they came home and told us about their visit and how good it had been. Never mind I have no one to blame but myself for not doing my research beforehand.

Peter and I walked to Capitol Hill which wasn’t far and after taking some photos of the reflecting pool and the Robert E Lee statue which was under repair but we could see enough to get the idea.

We made our way to the Capitol Hill Visitor Centre and made our way into this iconic building. We were lucky enough to get a place on the tour that takes you into the building rather than just into the exhibition hall.  Our tour guide was Chris and he was very informative about the places were seeing. The rotunda was particularly impressive. In the building there are lots of statues of people who represent each state, they are people who may be famous for something or have made a contribution to their state in some way. They aren’t all politicians which is nice. Chris explained how the government system worked and I have always found that a bit difficult to understand. I am not saying I understand it now but I do have a better idea. As we went through there were lots of tours happening simultaneously so you really had to keep up or get lost.

There weren’t only statues but  impressive art works as well in the building. Once finished there we had lunch at the restaurant which had a great variety of things to eat and at a reasonable price.  We spent quite awhile there looking at the exhibition hall as well. A very interesting time especially considering I haven’t even been to our Parliament House.

We then went on to have a short look at The Library of Congress and again what an impressive building. Lots of frescos on the walls and ceilings and so many rooms ro look in but by this time we had walked plenty and wanted to get home and get our packing sorted for the next leg of the trip to Las Vegas.

We were all tired after a busy few days so decided that dinner that night would be the leftovers in the fridge which was a variety of cheese, biscuits, cold meats and dip. It was a nice repast and enough for us considering we had all had a decent sized lunch.

As you can probably tell by now we are getting tired after nearly 7 weeks of travelling so we aren’t probably doing as much as we could or did in previous places but we were all still enjoying what we were doing.
